Katerina Svetlikova is a Czech installation artist and sculptor (b. 1978, Ostrov, CZ), who has been based in the UK since 2005. Svetlikova’s installations and sculptures are mostly made from collections of unusual natural and synthetic found or recycled materials. She arranges and combines these objects in a playful manner - her work can be poetic, as well as dark and profound.
Katerina Svetlikova was born in communist Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic) into a non-communist family and studied porcelain and ceramics from 1993 to 1997. Discouraged by her tutors from working on large-scale sculpture, she was steered towards studying the decoration of ceramics. During her time at university she discovered her passion for sculpture and installation, which soon became her preferred method of working. She is currently a fine art undergraduate at Arts University Bournemouth (AUB).
Artist Statement:
I am an artist whose desire is to find answers for sensitive questions of the present day. For me making art is a search for inner truths, whilst coping with the thoughts and emotions of every day life. I am inspired by nature, mortality, the brutality and beauty of human existence. Most of my work is concerned with aspects of identity. It can sometimes be light and playful, whilst at other times dark, heavy and profound. I am interested in everyday life and objects made by nature as well as objects produced by culture.
I create installations and sculptures. I use wide variety of materials such as found recycled objects or collections of them, pieces from nature and trails of human activity. I play, combine and study the quality of chosen materials and put them in different context to communicate or to ask. I am gently poking a nest of wild bees and stroking a snake with a bare foot to wake up deeper feelings and thoughts of the viewers and make them more aware and curious of the subject through my art.
